Motor vehicle warning gauges.

Cause and Effect

Many of us have been misled into thinking pain is a problem.

Headache? Numb it. Gall bladder malfunctioning? Remove it. Sore throat? Soothe it.

All of these so-called “solutions” make the symptom the problem rather than attending to the underlying cause.

Imagine if you approached your car with the same attitude. Engine noise? Turn up the radio. Annoying vibrations at highway speeds? Drive slower. Squealing brakes? Turn the radio up even louder!

Ridiculous, right? Yet many of us employ this attitude when it comes to our body. We occupy this miraculous self-healing, self-regulating organism, and if we’ll listen, it warns us when things are amiss. First, with a little whisper. Then a serious warning. Or finally by SHOUTING!

Then we have a choice: address the underlying cause (fix) or merely quiet the warning sign (patch).

Chiropractic care produces great results by attending to the cause, rather than merely suppressing symptoms. Do you know a pill-popping symptom-treating friend who could benefit from chiropractic care? Encourage them to give us a call. Or bring them along with you on your next visit.

Do You Yo-Yo?Yo-yo diets!

I’m not talking about yo-yo tricks like “Walk the Dog” or “Rock the Baby.” I mean, does your weight go up and down? Are you famous for exercising, then stopping?

We’ve been led to believe that maintaining our weight, fitness and spine is a once-in-a-while thing, rather than a lifestyle habit.

That’s one reason why diets are so disheartening. Most of them have a beginning, middle and end. Then we resume our former way of eating and gain it all back.

Some of our patients take this approach with their chiropractic care, too, stopping as soon as they feel better. Since their soft tissues and muscles never strengthen (that happens with continued care after symptoms subside), they relapse. Then we start over again with frequent visits.

Proper nutrition, rest and exercise, plenty of water and an interference-free nervous system are lifestyle choices. True health is a journey, not a destination; a process, not an event; a habit, not a diet.

Survivor

Survivor.

We’ve become a disposable society. We’re lucky if our television lasts 10 years. Computers?  Two or three years! We grumble, but few of us would prefer Windows 3.1 to our current operating system!

Unlike mechanical devices, some say our bodies are designed to last 120 years or longer. To achieve this feat, our bodies are designed to survive.

In fact, many everyday symptoms are merely survival strategies.

  • Bleeding from a cut? Survival strategy. Blood contact with air invokes the clotting response.
  • Runny nose? Survival strategy. Extra mucus production enhances immune system function.
  • Diarrhea? Survival strategy. Remove toxic food as quickly as possible.
  • Vomiting? Survival strategy. Remove toxic food even more quickly!
  • Pain? Survival strategy. This warning system tells us to make a change.
  • When you consider how many survival strategies our bodies use, you understand why the nervous system is so important—it orchestrates the whole show.

    How’d You Sleep Last Night?

If you find yourself yawning throughout the day, it may be because you aren’t getting enough sleep. Or enough high quality sleep. The problem? It may simply be the amount of light you’re exposed to.

    Trouble sleeping?

    Drowsiness at Work

Many shift workers have difficulty sleeping well because their work schedules conflict with their bodies’ natural sleep-wake cycle clues.

Melatonin, which is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain, affects both our desire to sleep and the quality of our sleep. Darkness enhances melatonin production, while light inhibits it.

Therefore, shift workers typically experience drowsiness when at work and suffer from insomnia when they try to sleep during daylight hours.

    Night Lights

Because bright lights can disturb the normal production of melatonin, and interfere with your ability to get a good night’s sleep, make sure your bedroom is completely dark. Create a darker environment by using light–blocking shades, lined curtains or even an eye mask to block out all light.

And don’t overlook night lights and those bright clock radio lights! Even an area of light the size of a coin falling onto your skin can affect the production of melatonin.

    The Elderly Suffer Too

One of the major health complaints for the over-65 population is difficulty sleeping.

This may be due to the fact that many elderly people do not spend sufficient time outdoors and therefore, lack an adequate amount of bright light exposure.

Getting outside more, or increasing the level of light in their homes during the day and early evening hours may actually alleviate the major cause of their sleep distress!

    Fixing Up and Tearing Down

Weeds!Because you and I have a physical body, we’re subjected to various laws of the physical universe. Among them, the second Law of Thermodynamics states that things go from order to disorder.

You may have noticed this with objects. Over time your closet gets cluttered, your lawn becomes infested with weeds and car parts wear out. With neglect, this happens to our bodies as well.

Various forces such as gravity, poor diet, lack of rest and exercise, negative attitudes and countless other stresses, cause our bodies to break down. Fortunately, we have an internal force that constantly works to counteract these external forces. (Our ability to heal is related to this internal force.)

Turns out, this inborn intelligence of our body is the nervous system—the focus of chiropractic care.

    It's all about the circuit.

    Avoiding  Short Circuits

Your quality of life is directly related to the quality of your nervous system. Your spinal cord is like the information superhighway with the “circuitry” necessary to run your body:

Sensory Nervous SystemTaste, touch, sight, sound and smell are examples of your nervous system sending information from sensory organs and tissues to your brain.

Motor Nervous SystemMotor nerves control how your muscles work. Compromise here might prevent you from standing or walking, or it could mean a lack of coordination, poor balance or wasting away.

Autonomic Nervous SystemThe autonomic nervous system controls cardiovascular, digestive and respiratory functions as well as salivation, perspiration, diameter of the pupils and many essential involuntary functions.

Sympathetic Nervous SystemThe sympathetic nervous system is probably best known for mediating the fight or flight response to stress. It has a deep connection with your hormonal system to secrete adrenaline, alert your cardiovascular system and the rest of the body of impending danger, real or imagined.

Like an electrician, we’re interested in the circuitry of your body. The moving bones of the spine are often the source of “brown outs,” short circuits and blown fuses. If you think chiropractic is only about your back, think again!

    Making introductions.

    Does Your Body Make Mistakes?

Ever forget the name of someone when making an introduction? Ever say one thing, but mean another?

These are functions of our conscious mind. Self-help books reveal how to improve our memory, increase our vocabulary or sharpen our mental acuity.

But there’s no book filled with tips about how to improve your heart’s response to adrenalin or how to enhance your lung’s ability to oxygenate blood! Why? Because these are just two examples of millions of functions your body controls and regulates with no conscious thought from you.

How does this relate to a headache, back pain or the crick in your neck?

Your body is programmed to survive. Virtually every sign or symptom that we traditionally think of as an illness is merely your body’s best attempt at survival. No errors. Zero mistakes. When your body feels threatened, it responds in a variety of ways to get your attention. To encourage you to change. To teach a lesson. To tell you its capacity to accommodate or adapt has been exhausted.

That’s amazing. Even radical. And to think, all of this is controlled and regulated by your nervous system—the focus of your chiropractic care!

    Health Care or Sick Care?

Active seniors.Traditionally, we see doctors when we have some type of obvious ache or pain. Yet, waiting for these obvious symptoms to appear before finally seeking help is becoming an increasing burden on our health care system, our economy and our well-being.

And while it may be called “health” care, it’s actually sick care.

Chiropractors are leading the way with real health care that’s designed to keep you well. Not surprising, it’s called wellness care. And the preliminary research is astonishing!

    Consider the following reports:

A study published in a 1996 edition of Topics in Clinical Chiropractic looked at a group of seniors aged 75 years or older. Subjects who were receiving chiropractic care reported experiencing better overall health and had fewer hospitalizations, used fewer medications and were more active than their peers who did not receive chiropractic care.

A more recent analysis published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics looked at 311 chiropractic patients aged 65 years or older who had been receiving “maintenance” chiropractic care for five years or longer. When compared with subjects who were not receiving chiropractic care, they had half as many medical doctor visits and overall had healthier habits.

Other studies further confirm what a growing number of our own patients have been telling us: it’s actually less expensive to stay well, than it is to get well.

Let us know how we can best support you and your individual health goals.

    Are You Just a Mechanism?

The human body is not just a mechanical object! In school you learned that human body was divided into different parts. The mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestines made up the digestive system. The bones made up the skeletal system. And so on.  This has contributed to the widely-held belief that you and I are merely a collection of parts, a belief that stands in the way of better health. It’s responsible for:

Isolation: Incorrectly thinking that organs and tissues operate independently of each other rather than together as part of an integrated whole.

Mechanism: The belief that we’re simply a collection of parts in which identical inputs (drugs) should produce identical results in all subjects.

We chiropractors go beyond mechanism to embrace what’s called vitalism:

Wholism: Each “part” has a purpose that contributes to the whole.

Intelligence: You and I can learn, create and adapt to our environment.

Self-healing: Cut your finger and your body can heal it. Mechanisms can’t.

Since the nervous system regulates these vital processes, chiropractic care is the centerpiece of the growing interest in vitalism.

Do Kids Have Bad Backs?Children benefit from chiropractic care.

“I couldn’t help but notice there was a child out in your reception room. Why would a child need to see a chiropractor?” The idea that children, even newborns, would see us to get adjusted is a stretch for some. How would a child benefit?

Birth trauma. All childbirth methods can take a toll on a baby’s spine.

Colic. Many babies experience extraordinary relief with chiropractic care.

Ear infections. Tension in the upper spine can affect the inner ear.

Children enjoy adjustments, and most respond quickly. They rarely have the scar tissue that we often see in adults with long-standing problems. And resolving problems early can avoid problems later on.

    Coasting

Bicycle coasting down hill. When it comes to your health, do you keep on top of it or are you just coasting?

After recovering your health, it’s tempting to coast. But that’s a surefire way to invite a relapse of your original problem. Why?

Imagine that your goal is to participate in a 10K run. To get in shape, you run every day. When race day arrives, you’re able to run the full 10K without stopping. If you were to stop training, would your ability to successfully run a 10K race remain with you the rest of your life? Of course not.

Spinal health is like that. Discontinuing your care once you feel better (coasting) interrupts the healing process. In fact, the most lasting changes occur with continued care after symptoms subside.

Are you coasting? Do you know someone who is? No problem. Just remember, we’ll be here to help when you’re ready to start pedaling again!

The Squeaky Wheel Gets the Grease

We all recognize this old saying, and it’s never truer than when it comes to our health. If we shut down the awareness to our body’s own cries for change, our body cries louder.

    And Louder.

    AND LOUDER!

Listen to your body!Until we finally listen and take the action to make some important changes.

That’s often what we see when new patients begin care in our practice with an obvious ache or pain.

First, they try to grin and bear it, figuring the problem will go away on its own.

When the problem doesn’t self-resolve, they often up the ante, suppressing the pain with over-the-counter medications.

While this may seem convenient, it merely prolongs the day when the underlying cause must inevitably be addressed.

Just as Einstein observed that problems are never solved at the same level that created them, they call us.

    Wise move.

Funny how so many people claim they don’t have the time for healthy habits and preventive measures, but when they lose their health, they somehow find it!

Listen to your body. What’s it telling you?

    Wellness News

June 2009 issue | back issues

Healthy news and information from Dr. Thomas Santucci. Published monthly by The Wellness Pros.

Health has to be prioritized, just like all other areas of your life.

How Much Is Your Health Worth?

It’s hard to put a price tag on something as important as our health, but we all do by the choices we make and the priorities we set.

It’s no surprise that those of us who work in health care place a high value on our health. Since we want everyone to benefit from better health, when we find out someone has discontinued their chiropractic care because they can’t afford it, we’re concerned. Are our fees out of line?

Turns out, it’s usually a matter of priorities and finances are a convenient excuse. Each of us has the free will to prioritize our health in the way we see fit. True, most of us take our health for granted until we lose it, but that may be just human nature.

If other issues in your life require more attention than your health, we understand. No need to make excuses or feel self-conscious. You won’t get a scolding, a sermon or even a raised eyebrow.

It’s your body, your health and your future. You’re the boss. We’re servants. Simply put, our job is to offer you the finest chiropractic care possible. Your job is to decide how much of it you want. No guilt. No shame. No problem.

    Protection from constant complainers!

    Do You Know a Complainer?

A common refrain we hear from patients is that they know someone who complains about their health but won’t take any action. These health issues often respond well to chiropractic care, but the suggestion to try chiropractic is rebuffed. And the complaining continues…

I know of three reasons people reject chiropractic and complain instead:

Fear. Trying something that doesn’t involve medication can be a stretch for some. Ask, and we can supply you with brochures that explain chiropractic to reduce their fear. Or invite them to accompany you on your next visit so they can see for themselves.

Ignorance. With little knowledge of chiropractic, many see it as merely a treatment for the spine. But because the focus of chiropractic care is the integrity of the nervous system (which controls everything), many other health issues resolve as well. Ask for a handout that shows the relationships among the spine, nervous system and all the tissues of the body.

Secondary gain. Some folks actually enjoy being sick! They may like the attention they receive or the reduced workload or expectations extended them due to their health. Remind them of the things they used to love. Paint a picture of the possibilities that await them by taking action.

You may need to make the call to arrange an appointment for them. If they’re not interested, consider getting a good set of headphones!

Don't buy everything the drug companies are selling!

Just the Cost of Doing Business?

Drug makers use TV and other media to encourage folks to “Ask your doctor if (drug name) is right for you.” Yet you rarely hear the thousands of people who permanently pay the “cost of doing business” as a result. Consider some of the terms used to minimize the resulting death toll:

Adverse reaction: Reaction to a drug that is detrimental to the recipient.

Side effect: An unwanted effect of a drug that is not part of the intended activity.

Drug interaction: The result of drugs reacting with each other, often in ways that are unexpected or potentially harmful.

Medical error: An inappropriate treatment, or the right treatment that was performed incorrectly.

Iatrogenic: A state of ill health or an adverse effect caused by a treatment, usually due to mistakes made in treatment.

Chiropractic is so safe that no “warning label” or fine-print disclaimers are necessary. Chiropractic is so safe that even newborns and the elderly can benefit. Chiropractic is so safe that the side effects are positive effects!

Looking For Health in All the Wrong Places

    Looking for health...
Have you ever lost your keys, misplaced your glasses or mislaid the TV remote? I’ll bet you tried to think back to the last time you had your keys, wore your glasses or used the remote, didn’t you?

Knowing where to look is the fastest way to find something. The same thing is true of recovering your health. We’re able to help so many people because we know where to look.

One of the key tenets of chiropractic is that health is our natural state. Health is normal. When someone isn’t healthy, our first inclination is to find out what could be interfering with this natural ability. Rather than focusing on the particular symptom, we look for what might be the underlying cause of the symptom.

Nine times out of ten, we find a disturbance in the controlling or regulating impulses of the nervous system. When communications between the brain and the body are impaired, this situation can produce a myriad of conditions that go by thousands of different names.

The most common source of compromise in brain/body communication is from the moving bones of the spine. Individual segments covering the information superhighway of your nervous system can “lock up” and stress nearby nerves. Or more precisely, vertebral subluxation.

    Headaches? Look to the spine.

Acid reflux? Look to the spine.

Inflamed tonsils? Look to the spine.

    Asthma? Look to the spine.

Carpal tunnel syndrome? Look to the spine.

Irritable bowel? You get the idea.

Does that mean chiropractic can cure everything? Of course not. But to regain your health, it’s a great place to start looking!

    Hypokinetic Diseases
    and Your Health

We’ve all heard the phrases couch potato, stick in the mud, slug, turtle, sloth, and beached whale.  All these names have been used to refer to someone who is lazy or not motivated and just doesn’t move around much. Sound familiar? In the US, 40% of the population gets no physical activity during their day. Now, this isn’t everyone, but this is a large part of the population.  We can see that it is a large part of the population because the Obesity epidemic has been rising every year.
Over the years, we have become more and more lazy as a society and technology is helping us with that.  Things as simple as a garage door opener; rather than getting out of our car to open the garage door, we push a button. The remote control, we no longer have to get up and turn the channel. Electric windows in our cars rather than the old fashion crank we used to use. Elevators and escalators were placed for your convenience so you don’t have to climb the stairs. Fast food is on every corner making the choice easy when we’ve worked all day long and need some fast fuel to keep us going. All these things have slowly cut out the calories that we burn in an average day, causing a decrease in activity across the nation.

This is where we start to see Hypokinetic diseases showing up in life. A Hypokinetic disease is due to inactivity or very low amounts of movement and exercise during the day.  Hypo- meaning low, kinetic- meaning motion or movement, meaning low movement. They are health problem that are brought on by having a lack of activity in your life, or just not getting the needed amount of exercise during your day. Diseases such as high cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, type II diabetes, osteoporosis, joint disorders, low back problems and blood vessel disease which can also cause a stroke.  These are only a few of the problems that arise when we don’t exercise on a regular basis.

Start a new hobby such as kayaking, geochaching, mountaineering, disc golf, or ultimate Frisbee. You might even have to go out of your way and buy a Wii Fit, coach a soccer game, or find the farthest bathroom from your desk.

Here are some simple solutions that can increase your daily movement:

    1. Take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator.
    2. Park far away from the store rather than trying to find the closest spot.
    3. Take your family on a walk after dinner or during the day.
    4. Go window shopping at the mall.
    5. Walk to simple places that are close, like a friends house or the grocery store, you will also save on gas money!
    6. Work in the yard or flower bed during the weekend.
    7. Take that poor dog for a walk that hasn’t seen pavement in weeks!
    8. Look for ways to include your friends and family in your new found activities.

    Fibromyalgia and Brain-Based Care

How new research has turned into clinical success for this serious painful condition.

    Pain Fatigue

    Insomnia

    Light Sensitivity

    Digestive Disorders

    Dizziness

    Moodiness

    Loss of intellect

    Depression

For some patient with Fibromyalgia, the list never ends.  How can one disorder affect how we think and how we digest food while causing constant pain at the same time?

    FIBROMYALGIA CAN !!

Many patients with Fibromyalgia have simply overwhelmed their doctors and support systems by having too many symptoms at once.  They had been sick for so long that they now think that a life of compromised physical and mental capability are “normal” for them.  Loved ones and doctors often think that they were “sensitive” or unrealistic about their pain.

We now know that Fibromyalgia is a true disease of modern man (or more likely woman) in this case.  Fibromyalgia occurs when the system has been overwhelmed and not been allowed to heal.  In many cases it starts with a significant period of exhaustion or physical trauma.  Again, women are more susceptible to this syndrome because of their complex hormonal and emotional systems.

Once established, the exhausted state often turns into a Chronic Fatigue state robbing the body of needed energy.   The adrenal system quickly becomes overwhelmed and Adrenal Exhaustion is commonplace.  This decreases the performance of all physical systems and begins to impair the brain’s ability to regulate the body.
For the brain to work properly, it must receive a constant stream of neural input from the body.  Bodies immersed in pain and inactivity from fatigue cannot send this important neural information.  Functional neurology provides the model of the neocortex control of primitive brainstem function which has been instrumental in resolving these difficult cases.
For many Fibromyalgia patients this important control has been diminished to the point that the primitive areas of the brain are allowed to without controls.  This creates the litany of symptoms that compose the Fibromyalgia Syndrome.  (Note: You can find out more on www.brain-basedcare.com)
Because the primitive brain or brainstem is now malfunctioning, the body looses the capacity to properly manage pain levels, balance, digestion, hormones, heart rhythms, and a host of other organ and physical systems.
    What do we know?
Fibromyalgia is a Pain Syndrome that often contains Physical (Trauma & Fatigue), Biochemical (Hormonal & Adrenals), and Neurological (Stress & Emotional) symptoms.

Because of this complexity, the diagnostic process must investigate all of these potential problem areas.

With the combination of Functional Neurology, Neurotransmitter Rebalancing, Blood Chemistry Analysis and Brain-based care techniques, even long-term Fibromyalgia is addressable.

    The Fix-It List
In order to assess Fibromyalgia the following test are performed in order to develop a workable diagnosis.
    • Adrenal Stress Index
    • Neurotransmitters Assessment
    • Brain Pathway Examination
    • Metabolic Assessment for organ function
    • OptiChem Analysis for Blood Chemistry

These straight-forward tests demonstrate to you and your family and your support team that a real and addressable problem exists. They also provide an objective basis for treatment.
